Mots clés
The Joys of Motherhood;Money;the Igbo man
Résumé
African womanism, as defined by Ogunyemi, is applied to Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood (1979) to answer these questions: what have the effects of modern, European and colonial encroachments brought to the traditional Igbo society? What do money and motherhood mean to the Igbo man and woman in traditional Ibuza as epitomized by male and female characters in The joys of Motherhood? What are the means used by the male protagonist to be free in colonial Lagos and how does the female protagonist use her motherhood in the same place in order to survive during the colonial period? How do money and motherhood lead to the male and female protagonists’ decline?
