Abstract This study examines the contribution of local politics and urban areas in the implementation of Agenda 21 for local sustainable development in Algeria. Thus, a literature theory has been developed for each of the local development, urban, sustainable development, Agenda 21, benchmarks. Then, it has been reviewed the legal and institutional, as well as the national strategy for environmental protection and sustainable development in Algeria. Therefore it has been addressing the policies and programs of local development and urban areas taken by Algeria so to activate the development process, the full national territory, after the failure of previous development policies, which have been relied on central planning. We study and analyze indicators of the Millennium Development Goals to identify the percentage goal that has been achieved. This will determine the contribution of these policies in the implementation of Agenda 21 for local sustainable development. Finally, we evaluated these policies and identify its weaknesses, and made recommendations that we may see as an opportunity to activate and to address its shortcomings.
