Résumé
The words writers use are not always innocent. The novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, will be approached within the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis to track bias that sometimes might not be apparent to a layperson. To do so, we will use the general framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics and more precisely Halliday’s Register Theory (context of situation). Characters’ interactions are analyzed in terms of Field of discourse, i.e. the topic under discussion; Tenor, i.e. the relationship between the characters and Mode, i.e. the role of their language. Once interactions in the novel are systematically analyzed, they will be classified in terms of the form of bias they contain. Then, by statistics, we can guess whether Hemingway is biased and towards whom there is bias. Such exploration may unveil the writer’s hidden intensions as well as show the importance of knowing about biased language so as to avoid it.
