Résumé This research aims at evaluating the secondary school third year English textbook ‘New Prospects’ to identify the gap’s cause between its content and the teaching/learning context. It also attempts to investigate the constraints that prevent teachers from bridging the gap via supplementation and adaptation. Both teachers and learners’ questionnaires were used revealing dissatisfaction with the textbook ‘New Prospects’ from both parts, i.e. teachers and learners. Furthermore, the teaching/learning environment hinders teachers in adapting the ‘incompatible’ textbook lessons. The textbook ‘New Prospects’ evaluation has unveiled a mismatch between the textbook and the target learners due to its incompatible reading texts, activities and listening passages. Hence, a sample unit is adapted using different textbook adaptation techniques. Such an attempt aims at investigating the textbook flexibility towards adaptation. Though its lessons are interrelated, the textbook ‘New Prospects’ can be adapted to be used systematically and flexibly. Statut Signalé
