Résumé
Language changes according to the context of its use. This results in different varieties. Slang is one of its outputs. It is developed within a particular group. As first year master students in Mostaganem English Department are a community that its members own shred interest, slang is created among its participants. The present study is on the use of slang among the previously mentioned target population. It endeavours to uncover the features of slang and the functions for which this variety is used. Moreover, attitudes towards using slang are shown in this research. The data is collected from first year master students in the English Department of Mostaganem University by means of questionnaires’ survey. The latter is filled with slang terms that they use in both academic and non-academic concerns and the functions of its use. Interviews are organized to ask students and teachers about their attitudes towards slang. In addition, speeches of students are recorded in order to see the frequency of slang use. Data collected are analyzed through different approaches. The quantitative one is employed for the measurement of the most frequent type of slang and the functions for which it is used. The qualitative one is utilized to describe and understand the functions and the attitudes towards slang. Most importantly, the aspects that should be considered are the linguistic and semantic features
