We wonder why university English as a foreign language learning (EFL) students fail to get good marks in official exams. More presisely , why students especially of master degree have difficulties to conduct a research work and may seem lost when, for example, they simply come to look for a book in library, what about having to make a whole dissertation in a very short time? Through our personal observation of students of master one degree, and despite their introduction to ways of research and courses in methodology, they have problems in relying on themselves, their capacities and the amount of instruction and advice gained after years of study. Even if the actual situation of teaching English in Algerian universities gives the opportunity to learners to be autonomous, and even if teavhers show rediness for promoting their learners’ autonomy, these do seem to be sufficient. Involving the learner in the leaning process is not an easy task. University students are not made aware of how, when and why to use language learning strategies. Teachers do not teach explicitly the techniques of learning the English language in general and how to conduct a research work more precisely. Statut Validé
