Résumé
William Blake and Walt Whitman both belong to the Romantic movement characterized by the longing for nature in an age of rapid change. While the first poet echoed the changes that occured in Britain due to the Industrial Revolution, the second heralded the Renaissance of a typical American voice with its specific quest for identity. What is problematic, however, is their reccurent theme of spirituality which is, on the one hand, handled as a purely religious matter, and on the other, as a purely artistic one. The way they both tended to give voice to the spirit, and utter something that used to be unatterable seems quite interesting. the burden of this research lies in exploring the different aspects of the poets’ spirituality, the way they underwent such spiritual moments of meditation and illumination, and the effects of their lifelong experience on the British and American cultures as well as their influence on other men of letters.
